  Looks like there is an unintended(?) trick where you can enter in the first two pieces in the wrong order, which allows a 300ish step solution. Maybe you could move the top red portal one space right and put a down purple switch where it was to prevent it.

    @qqwref: You are correct about that trick being unintended. Thanks for describing it to me! I thought I ironed out all of the weird tricks and shortcuts but looks like that one snuck in. I suppose that makes the optimal solution more interesting and gets the puzzle under 300 moves. I'm curious how big of an impact this fun bug has on the 3x3 and 4x4 versions.

    @mathmasterzach: It just occured to me that it shouldn't have any impact at all on the 4x4 puzzle you published. There the first two boxes you have to enter are the same (red), so swapping them won't gain you anything.

  This is the first time I've ever mapped out my strategy off-game. It paid off! I don't expect the gold to stand though.

    @jomegat: That's great! In a way, one of my goals was to make a puzzle that was amenable to planning. Glad you enjoyed it.
